Instagram Username Checker

Type the username you want and this free Instagram username availability checker tells you straight away whether you can still claim it. If it's taken, you'll get close alternatives you can check with one click, so you're not guessing variations by hand inside the app.

Instagram Username Checker

It runs online in your browser. No Instagram account is needed and nothing gets registered when you check. This is the same engine behind our username availability check on the homepage, narrowed to Instagram so the answer comes back faster.

Availability Check

Check Instagram Username Availability

Checking Instagram username availability before you commit saves a surprising amount of hassle. You might have a bio written, a logo made and a matching domain in mind, and then find the handle went years ago. Run the check first and you'll know in a few seconds.

Type the name without the @ and press Check. A green Available means no public profile exists at that address right now. Taken means an account already uses it, and you'll usually see a link to that profile so you can confirm. Unknown appears when Instagram is limiting automated checks at that moment. Wait a minute and run it again rather than trusting a guess.

When a name comes back available, claim it quickly. Instagram usernames are first come, first served, and nothing about a check here holds the name for you. If you're setting up a new account, type the name when Instagram asks you to create a username. If you already have an account, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username, enter the new name and save. Instagram shows a warning straight away if the name can't be used, so you'll know within seconds whether it worked.

How It Works

How the Instagram Handle Checker Works

Your Instagram handle and your username are the same thing: the name after the @ that makes up your profile address, instagram.com/yourname. So whether you call it an Instagram handle checker, an IG username checker, or you just want to check Instagram handle availability, it's the same test. The checker looks at that exact address. If a public profile loads, the handle is in use. If nothing loads, it's shown as available.

That method is fast and doesn't need you to log in, but it has one honest blind spot. Some handles belong to accounts that don't show a public profile at all, most often accounts that have been deactivated or were deleted recently. The checker can't see those, so a handle can read as available here and still be refused when you try to set it in the app. If that happens to you, the section on taken usernames below explains what's going on.

Instagram Name Availability: Username vs Display Name

People search for "Instagram name availability" meaning two different things, so it's worth separating them.

Username

Your username is unique. Only one account in the world can hold it, and that's what this checker tests.

Display name

Your display name is the bold name shown under your photo. It doesn't need to be unique, so thousands of accounts can use "Jess Taylor" or "Brooklyn Coffee" at the same time, and there's nothing to check.

So if an Instagram name checker tells you a name is taken, it's always talking about the username. You can still use the same words as your display name, which is a handy fallback when the exact handle is gone. Put the brand name in the display name and use a close variation, like brooklyncoffee.co, as the handle.

Why an Instagram Username Shows as Taken When Nobody's Using It

This is the most common frustration with Instagram usernames. You find a handle with no posts, no profile picture and no activity for years, and Instagram still won't give it to you.

A few things cause it:

  • The account is inactive but still exists.

Instagram doesn't free up a username just because the account holding it has gone quiet. Its own Help Center says that if a username you want is being used by an account that seems inactive, you should choose an available version of it instead.

  • The account is deactivated.

A deactivated account is hidden but not deleted, and it keeps its username in case the owner comes back. From the outside it looks like the name is free.

  • The account was deleted recently.

Usernames from deleted accounts aren't always released straight away, so a name can stay blocked for a while after the account is gone.

  • Someone just changed their handle.

When an account switches usernames, its old name is open for anyone else to claim. A name that moves between accounts can look free one day and be taken the next.

  • The name is restricted.

Instagram holds back some names, such as ones that could impersonate a well-known brand or an official account.

There's no official form to request someone else's inactive username. Instagram's terms also say you can't buy, sell or transfer any part of your account, including your username, so treat anyone offering to sell you a handle with suspicion. If you hold a registered trademark and another account is using it to impersonate your brand, that's a separate trademark report to Instagram, not a username request.

The Rules

Instagram Username Rules

  • Up to 30 characters
  • Letters, numbers, . _
  • No leading or trailing period
  • Not case-sensitive

An Instagram username can be up to 30 characters long. It can only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no spaces, hyphens, emoji or other symbols. A username can't start or end with a period, and you can't put two periods in a row.

Usernames aren't case-sensitive. "BrooklynCoffee" and "brooklyncoffee" are the same handle to Instagram, so there's no point checking capitalized versions separately. Instagram shows every handle in lowercase anyway.

Once you've set a username, you can change it again later from Edit Profile. Don't confuse this with your display name, which Instagram only lets you change twice within 14 days. Instagram doesn't publish the same limit for usernames. The catch is that when you switch, someone else can claim your old username, and you can't count on getting it back. If you're changing handles and want to keep the old one out of other hands, think twice before letting it go.

If It's Taken

What to Do If Your Instagram Username Is Taken

Change as little as you can. The best alternatives keep the core of the name readable and add something small and meaningful. Some that tend to work:

  • Add a period or underscore between words: brooklyn.coffee, brooklyn_coffee
  • Add what you do: brooklyncoffeeco, brooklyncoffeeshop
  • Add where you are: brooklyncoffeenyc
  • Add a short prefix: getbrooklyncoffee, thebrooklyncoffee
  • Shorten one word or use initials: bklyncoffee

Avoid random strings of numbers at the end. They make a handle harder to remember and can look like a spam account. The checker's suggestions follow the same logic, so check a few of those before building your own list.

If you'd rather browse available Instagram usernames than tweak the one you had, the Instagram username generator suggests fresh names by style, and the aesthetic username generator leans toward softer, prettier names. Want one name that's free on Instagram and everywhere else? The main username generator checks ideas across platforms. Chasing a very short handle? Four-letter and rare names are almost all gone on Instagram, but the short and OG username generator is built for finding the few that aren't.

Cross-Platform

Check the Same Handle on Other Platforms

If you're building a brand, the Instagram handle is only one piece. It's much easier for people to find you when the name matches across every app. Before you lock in an Instagram username, run the same name through our username search across 1,000+ sites. One search shows where it's free and where it's gone, so you don't end up as @brooklyncoffee on Instagram and something awkward on TikTok.

For the next most common platforms, the TikTok username checker and the Snapchat username checker work the same way as this page. And if you were actually trying to find an existing Instagram account rather than claim a new name, the Instagram username search is the tool for that.
