TikTok Username Checker
Type the TikTok username you want and find out straight away if it's free. If someone already has it, you'll get close alternatives you can check with one tap, so you're not stuck guessing inside the app.
This free TikTok username availability check tool runs online in your browser. You don't need a TikTok account, and nothing is registered when you check. It's the same engine as the username availability check on our homepage, focused on just TikTok.
Check TikTok Username Availability
Checking TikTok username availability first saves you from a frustrating loop in the app, where you type a name, get told it's unavailable, try another, and repeat. Do the checking here and only open TikTok once you have a name you know is free.
Type the name without the @ and press Check. Available means no TikTok profile exists at that address right now. Taken means an account already uses it, and you'll usually get a link to that profile so you can see who has it. Unknown shows up when TikTok is limiting automated checks for a moment. Wait a little and try again rather than guessing.
Got an Available result? Claim it quickly, because TikTok handles are first come, first served and a check doesn't hold the name for you. In the app, go to Profile, tap Edit profile, then Username, type the new name and tap Save. TikTok checks it on the spot, and your profile link updates to the new name.
How the TikTok Username Checker Works
Every TikTok account lives at a public address: tiktok.com/@yourname. The checker looks at that exact address. If a profile loads, the username is taken. If nothing loads, it's shown as available.
It's quick and needs no login, but it has one blind spot worth being upfront about. Accounts that are banned, or deleted but still being held by TikTok, don't show a public profile, so their usernames can look free here and still be refused when you try to claim them. If that happens, the next section explains why. In most of those cases the practical fix is a close variation.
Already have a name in mind and want to see who's behind it rather than claim it? The TikTok username search is built for looking up existing accounts.
Why a TikTok Username Shows as Taken With No Account
You find the perfect handle, search for it on TikTok, see nothing, and the app still says it's unavailable. A few things cause this:
The account was deleted, but the name is still held.
TikTok doesn't publish a timeline for releasing usernames from deleted accounts. People report names freeing up anywhere from a few days to several months later, with no reliable pattern.
The account was banned.
Banned accounts usually keep their usernames, sometimes for good.
Someone just changed their handle.
When a TikTok user switches usernames, the old one isn't released straight away. It stays unavailable for a short time before anyone else can take it.
The account exists but looks empty.
Sometimes the profile does load, but there are no videos and no activity for years. TikTok doesn't take usernames back from accounts that have simply gone quiet, so the name stays taken.
The name is reserved.
TikTok holds back some names, such as trademarked brand names or names that could be used to impersonate an official account.
There's no form for requesting someone else's username, and buying one from another user isn't a safe route either. The practical answer is a variation, which the next section helps with.
TikTok Username Rules
- 2 to 24 characters
- Letters, numbers, . _
- No leading or trailing period
- No two periods in a row
A TikTok username can be 2 to 24 characters long. It can only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so spaces, hyphens, emoji and symbols aren't allowed. A username can't start or end with a period, and you can't use two periods in a row. If you type a name that breaks these rules, the checker tells you before it even looks it up.
Your username and your display name are separate. The username is the unique @handle in your profile link. The display name is the bigger name on your profile, it doesn't have to be unique, and it can include spaces and emoji. If the exact handle you want is gone, you can still use those words as your display name and choose a close variation for the username.
You can only change your username once every 30 days, so pick something you're happy to keep for at least a month. The display name can change more often, once every 7 days.
What to Do If Your TikTok Username Is Taken
Change as little as possible, so the name still sounds like you. These tweaks usually work:
- Add a period or underscore: cook.with.kira, cookwith_kira
- Add what you post: kiracooks, kirabakes
- Add a short tag people recognize: kiraofficial, thekiracooks, kira.tv
- Add where you're based: kiracooksnyc
- Use initials or a shortened word: kbcooks
Skip long number strings. They make a handle look like TikTok's default "user" accounts and they're hard to remember. The checker's suggestions follow these same patterns, so check a few before writing your own list.
Want fresh ideas instead of variations? The TikTok username generator builds names in different styles and checks each one as it goes. For a very short or rare handle, try the short and OG username generator, though three- and four-letter TikTok names are hard to find now.
Check the Same Name on Other Platforms
If you're building a following, it helps to have the same name everywhere people might look for you. Before you settle on a TikTok handle, run it through our username search across 1,000+ sites to see where else it's free. The Instagram username checker and Snapchat username checker work the same way as this page, and the main username generator can find a name that's free across several apps at once.
